Throw Blanket FAQ: Sizes, Warmth, Care & Styling
Clear answers to common throw blanket questions, from sofa and bed sizes to warmth, washing, drying and everyday styling.
A throw blanket is a versatile layer for your lap, sofa, reading chair or the foot of a bed. The right one depends on the coverage you need, how warm you like to feel and how you plan to care for it. A throw size is not a universal measurement, and a larger blanket is not automatically the warmer choice.
This throw blanket FAQ answers common questions about sizes, materials, washing, drying and styling, with real examples from Hammora. Start with the question you came for, then compare the measurements and care instructions before choosing.
1. What is a throw blanket used for?
A throw blanket adds a convenient layer of comfort and a decorative touch to a room. You can wrap it around your shoulders, cover your legs while reading, keep it on a sofa for cooler evenings or fold it across the foot of a bed.
For a blanket you will use every day, prioritize coverage, feel and care. For a mostly decorative throw, also consider how its color and texture work with the furniture around it. The most useful throw is one you can comfortably reach for, rather than one that only looks good in a photograph.
2. What is the difference between a throw and a regular blanket?
A throw usually serves as a portable comfort layer or accent, while a bed blanket is selected to cover a mattress and the person sleeping under it. The distinction is mainly about intended use and dimensions, not a single fabric or fixed size.
Check the actual measurements. A product called a “large throw” may offer more coverage than another brand's “sofa blanket.” If you need overnight bed coverage, compare the blanket with your mattress and preferred side drop instead of buying by the name alone.
3. What size is a standard throw blanket?
About 50 × 60 in is a familiar throw size, but there is no single size used by every brand. You will also find 50 × 70 in, 60 × 80 in and other measurements. For example, L.L.Bean lists 50 × 60 in and 60 × 80 in options for its Wicked Plush Throw; those are product sizes, not an industry-wide rule.
Hammora's own blanket sizes vary by design:
| Blanket | Listed size | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud-Ribbed Throw | 39 × 59 in | A lap layer, reading chair or compact sofa accent |
| Cloud-Ribbed Large Throw | 59 × 79 in | More coverage when stretching out on a sofa |
| Cloud-Puff Throw | 59 × 71 in | A plush wrap or armchair layer |
| Cloud-Puff Sofa | 59 × 79 in | A generous layer across a couch |
| Cloud-Puff Bed | 90 × 90 in | A larger decorative or comfort layer for a bed |
Measurements are listed in width × length and are approximate. Choose according to your own height, furniture and desired coverage; a suggested use does not guarantee a particular fit.
4. What size throw blanket should I get for a sofa?
Choose a sofa throw by the person and the coverage you want, rather than the overall length of the couch. A compact throw may be enough for your lap. If you want to cover your legs while lying down, check that the length reaches comfortably from your intended starting point to your feet.
- For a lap layer: check the width across your seated legs and how much length you want over your knees.
- For stretching out: measure along the sofa from your upper body to your feet.
- For sharing: compare the width across both people. Buying two separate throws may be more practical than sharing one.
- For styling: measure the arm, seat or back section you want to drape.
A tape measure or a blanket you already own gives you a more useful reference than a size label. Our guide to choosing a throw for a sofa, bed or reading chair explores those different setups.
5. Can a throw blanket fit a queen or king bed?
A throw can decorate a queen or king bed without being large enough to serve as its main bed blanket. Decide whether you want a folded accent, a layer across the foot of the mattress or full coverage before choosing.
To work out a side-to-side drape, add your desired drop on both sides to the mattress width. For example, a 60 in wide mattress with a 10 in drop on each side needs approximately 80 in of blanket width. That is a fit calculation, not a promise that every throw will cover a queen bed.
For sleeping coverage, check both width and length, including the parts you plan to tuck in. A decorative layer at the foot of the bed can be considerably smaller.
6. What makes one throw blanket warmer than another?
Warmth depends on the combination of fabric, thickness, construction and coverage. A fabric name or a plush photograph alone cannot tell you exactly how warm a blanket will feel in your room.
Think about when you will reach for it. A lighter layer may suit a heated room, a short reading break or someone who gets warm easily. A heavier, plusher blanket may feel more appropriate on a cold evening. Your room temperature and personal preference still matter.
Within Hammora's range, the Cloud-Ribbed is described as a lightweight everyday layer, while the Cloud-Puff is the heavier, plusher option. These are product descriptions, not laboratory temperature ratings. For a fuller comparison, read our guide to faux fur and textured throw blankets.
7. Is a faux rabbit fur throw made from real rabbit fur?
No. “Faux rabbit fur” describes a fabric designed to imitate the look and feel of rabbit fur. It does not mean the blanket contains real rabbit fur.
Check the material label for the exact fiber composition; a texture name does not tell you the full composition. Hammora's Cloud-Puff is sold as a faux rabbit fur blanket. If a particular fiber content is important to you, confirm the product details before ordering.
8. Can you wash a throw blanket in the washing machine?
Machine wash a throw only when its care label permits it. Follow the specified cycle, temperature and detergent guidance, and check that the blanket can move freely within your washer's capacity. A blanket that fits into the drum tightly may still be too bulky for a suitable wash.
Whirlpool's blanket washing guide also recommends starting with the care label because cleaning methods vary by material.
Hammora currently lists a cold, gentle machine wash for both the Cloud-Ribbed and Cloud-Puff, with a separate first wash and no bleach. Always follow the label supplied with your particular blanket.
9. Can throw blankets go in the dryer?
Use a dryer only if the blanket's care label allows it, at the stated setting. Air drying is not interchangeable with tumble drying for every fabric, so check how the manufacturer says to support and dry the blanket.
Hammora's Cloud-Ribbed and Cloud-Puff product pages currently list tumble drying on low or air drying. Follow the supplied label, allow the blanket to dry completely before storing it and avoid choosing extra heat to hurry the process.
10. How often should you wash a throw blanket?
Wash frequency should reflect how often the throw is used and what it comes into contact with. A daily lap blanket used around food or pets will usually need attention sooner than a throw kept mainly for display.
Check regularly for spills, visible soil and odors. Deal with spills promptly using a method suitable for the fabric, and use the care label to plan the full wash. There is no single calendar interval that suits every throw and household.
11. How do you style a throw blanket on a couch?
Choose one clear placement: folded over an arm, draped over a corner or laid along part of the back. Keep enough of the seat clear for someone to sit down and reach the blanket easily.
- A tidy arm fold: fold the throw into a long strip, then lay it over the arm with the ends hanging evenly.
- A relaxed corner: let one section fall from the back onto a seat cushion, then adjust the folds by hand.
- A visible back layer: fold the throw across a section of the sofa back to show its color and texture.
Start with one throw and a small number of cushions. Sit down, use the blanket, then put it back: if the arrangement is awkward to remake, simplify it. A room should feel comfortable to live in.
12. What color throw blanket should I choose?
Choose a color that repeats something in the room or creates the contrast you want. A similar shade creates a quieter look; a contrasting shade makes the throw stand out.
On a beige sofa, try ivory for a soft tonal effect or a deeper brown for definition. On a gray sofa, warm ivory or a muted pink can introduce a gentler accent. On a brown sofa, compare lighter neutrals with the room's existing wood and upholstery tones.
These are styling starting points, not fixed rules. Check the product images and remember that lighting and screen settings can affect how a color appears.
13. Is a throw blanket a good gift?
A throw blanket can be a thoughtful gift when its size, warmth and care requirements fit the recipient's routine. Think about where they would use it: a reading chair, a shared sofa, a bedroom or a small apartment.
Choose a manageable size, a texture they enjoy and a color that works with their space. If you are unsure, check the measurements and care instructions before focusing on decorative details. Review the store's return policy if you are buying well ahead of the occasion.
14. Which Hammora throw blanket should I choose?
Choose the Cloud-Ribbed for a lighter everyday layer, or the Cloud-Puff when you prefer a heavier, plusher feel. Then select your coverage from the actual dimensions on the product page.
- The Cloud-Ribbed Throw Blanket: polyester fleece with a raised ribbed finish, available in 39 × 59 in and 59 × 79 in sizes.
- The Cloud-Puff Faux Rabbit Fur Throw Blanket: a dense, plush texture, available in 59 × 71 in, 59 × 79 in and 90 × 90 in sizes.
